THOMASVILLE,GA – The Thomas University Football team officially wrapped up what has been a jammed back Summer slate this past weekend with back to back camps.
PROSPECT CAMP
The Green and White started off on Friday evening with their second annual prospect camp. The camp was open to all rising 9th-12th graders and those with current or post military services, allowing potential future Night Hawks to get on the radar of the coaching staff. Each prospect had the chance to showcase their skills individually from both sides of the ball.
Head Coach Orlando Mitjans was very excited about how things were going throughout the camp and the level of talent that stopped by the Rose City in hopes of becoming a part of a historical program in the near future.
"We got the opportunity to see some young men that we have not seen during the year that have been interested in TU and also being a part of the National Guard," said Coach Mitjans. "We also got the chance to see future Night Hawks from class of 2024-2025 and that is always good to put a name to a face."
Coach Orlando was very pleased to see how this year's number of participants has doubled since last year's prospect camp, proven to show a great amount of success in just two years.
"I see that the talent base is a lot different from year one to year two of our prospect camp," said Orlando Mitjans. "Last year's group, we had more people for the future than for right now and that is what you are always looking for when you have a camp like this."
Current members of the Green and White team also stopped by the prospect camp to look at their potential future teammates and show leadership to the younger generations.
"It is always good when you can get your players around high school athletes or athletes who are looking to come to TU." It also shows that these young men have brought into the program and what our coaching staff has been able to produce on and off the field."
YOUTH CAMP
The Night Hawks ended their eventful weekend with their first annual youth camp Saturday morning. The camp was open to any rising 1st-5th graders. Each participant learned basic football fundamentals all while being able to be a part of something historic.
Coach Orlando was very pleased with the turnout of the youth camp and how much joy he saw not only in the participants but their families as well.
"The biggest thing was not only seeing the kids running around but seeing their parents in the stands cheering them on with smiles on their faces." "It was also great to see our coaching staff having fun as well."
Coach Mitjans knew that ending the Night Hawk's Summer slate by impacting the younger generation will hold great value for not only the program heading into the season but leaving a long-lasting legacy in the community.
"I hope that we are ready and prepared as a coaching staff for when our players arrive for Fall camp soon," said Coach Orlando. "Anytime you have a youth camp it is more of a relaxing day." "It is also more for the community and to see young men that maybe years down the road will come to TU."
Coach Mitjans shared his final thoughts about this year's eventful summer and the excitement leading into this upcoming season.
" I cannot wait until September 2nd to get here." "I need a packed house from the entire Thomasville Community!"
The Green and White will now turn their attention toward Fall camp in preparation for a historical moment happening this September.
Thomas will begin their season on September 2nd at Veterans Memorial Stadium with a kickoff time set for 12pm EST.
