ABOUT THOMAS
Kayla Folse registered a goal and assist, while Anna Gray pumped in two assists to lead Thomas to a 3-0 season-opening win at Columbia (S.C.) on Aug. 19 at Younts Stadium. The Night Hawks, who have won six of their last seven road games, ended a four-match losing streak in season openers and two-match skid to the Koalas. Thomas earned its first shutout in a season opener since an 11-0 triumph at Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in 2012. The Night Hawks broke a scoreless tie in the 70th minute when Whitley Anderson beat Columbia netminder Morgan McCray for her first career goal with aid from Gray and Taylor Hults.Â
"I knew that back side of the field was going to be open because it had been open a couple of times," Anderson said. "Once I saw Anna cross it, I had a feeling I was going to get to it. I barely did, but it hit the back of the net, and it was great. The whole team swarmed me, and it felt awesome."
Folse added an insurance goal for the Green and White in the 71st minute when she found the back of the net off assists by Gray and Linnea Roivas.Â
In the 84th minute, Ciera McGriff-Duncan scored her second-career goal against Columbia off a feed from Folse. The assist was Folse's second against the Koalas in as many games.
Night Hawk goalkeeper Kara Houston posted her fourth-career shutout, recording two saves.
"You could tell (before the match) everyone was really focused," Gray said. "We all said in warmups that we had a really good feeling going into the game. We were in the zone, we were ready, and we delivered."
The Night Hawks outshot Columbia, 13-7, and held an edge in corner kicks, 6-3.
"We know that we need to go out in the next two games with the same intensity that we had last weekend," Gray commented.
ABOUT TRUETT MCCONNELL
Thursday's match against the Night Hawks is the 2017 opener for the Bears. Truett McConnell is coming off a 9-10 campaign in 2016, including a 4-6 mark in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The Bears ranked 24th in the NAIA in shots on goal per game last season.Â
Truett McConnell returns its leading goal scorer from a season ago in Jasmin Lanuza, who registered seven.
The Bears last faced Thomas on Oct. 19, 2009, a 4-0 win for the Green and White.
ABOUT POINT
Point opened its season with a 4-0 home win over Faulkner (Ala.) on Aug. 19, opening the scoring with a goal from Sabria Marquez at 31:53. The Skyhawks took a 2-0 lead in the second half on the first collegiate goal by Vanessa Lara at 69:54. Point added two more goals by Nicole Santos at 75:24 and Tayler Beasley at 81:15.
Point's defense held Faulkner to just four shots the entire match. The Skyhawks totaled 14 shots on goal and 13 corner kicks.
Point goalkeeper Rachel Ash recorded her first career shutout, making three saves in her ninth career start.
