THOMASVILLE– The Thomas Night Hawks celebrated five seniors as they beat the Faulkner Lady Eagles 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Faulkner came out aggressive early with three shots in the sixth, eighth and ninth minute. In the 11th minute, a shot by Oluwatomisin Eludipo was saved by Thomas keeper Chantelle Thomson.
The Night Hawks soon went on the attack as they took three straight shots on goal in the 12th minute. However, they finally hit paydirt in the 16th minute, as Madelyn Musgrove headed in her fourth goal of the season off a corner from Sasha Manders.
But four minutes later, Jarica Lawrence maneuvered past two defenders to go one-on-one with the keeper. Lawrence's shot found its mark as the senior earned her first goal of the season to give Thomas a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Eagles found more opportunities to get on the board. As a shot from Eludipo again found the hands of Thomson.
Thomas saw two more chances as Pearl Mortimer's shot was saved in the 34th minute and Ali Baca shot before the half was stopped as well.
Faulkner went on the attack, taking a shot only a minute and 36 seconds into the half.
Another opportunity came in the 53rd minute, but Thomson sent it away again.
As the Thomas defense continued to stand firm, the attack saw plenty of chances to extend the lead. A header from Mortimer was deflected. Then Elsebeth Andersen attempted a shot, but it hit the crossbar.
The Lady Eagles tried desperately to find a goal, but Thomson and the defense stood firm as time ran out.
The freshman from Wigan, England earned her first career clean sheet as she finished with eight saves in the win.
In a ceremony before the game, the team honored seniors Manders, Baca, Andersen, Lawrence and player turned student assistant Leah Villafuerte for their contributions to the program and accomplishments.
The Night Hawks will close out the regular season on Wednesday, October 22nd at 4:00p.m against ABAC.
