Nine Men’s Soccer Players Earn All-Conference Awards

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Sun Conference handed out its men's soccer honors for the 2016 season Thursday at the Sun Conference Championship banquet hosted by regular-season runner-up St. Thomas. The conference recognized nine Thomas University players.
 
Jarrod Ingram was named the player of the year, while Ricky Zambrano received the coach of the year honors. Goalkeeper Lee Howarth, defender Antonio Rodriguez, Severin Abt and forward Ingram were all named to the first team all-conference. Defender Donal Branagan and midfielder Richie Slaney earned second team all-conference, while Juan Figueroa was named to the honorable mention team. Rodriguez, Jake Slocombe, Abt, Figueroa and James Taube received academic all-conference honors.

The banquet was held on the eve of Friday's championship matchup between the second-seeded Bobcats and No. 4 seed Keiser Seahawks.  
The Night Hawks placed four on the All-Sun Conference first team, to be joined by three from Southeastern and Keiser. SCAD and St. Thomas also had two players named to the team.

Thomas earned two of the top honors, as junior forward Jarrod Ingram was named the player of the year and Ricky Zambrano was tabbed coach of the year. Ingram led the Night Hawks with a team high 19 goals and three assists for 41 points. He was also tops in the conference in goals, shots, and shots on goal. 

Aaron Molloy of Keiser, a midfielder from Dublin, Ireland was named Sun Conference freshman of the year. Aaron started 12 of the 13 games he appeared in while scoring four goals and racking up two assists for 10 points. 

The champions of character award went to Warners' Austin Shaner. He was Nominated West Central FL FCA player of the year in 2016 and founded and led Warner's Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) which has now grown to more than 100 students.  Austin is also involved with Inroads College Ministry, and works for Warner's Admissions office and works for childcare at his church. 

The winner of Friday's championship game will earn an automatic berth in the NAIA men's soccer National Championship Opening Round. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and live stats and video will be available through Stretch Internet.
