THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Throughout the United States, October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Thomas University athletics is doing its part in helping the cause and spreading awareness.
The pink ribbon symbol dates back to the 1990s when Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation handed out the ribbons to participants in their "Race for the Cure" held in New York City, N.Y. The pink tradition has lived on ever since, spreading awareness on preventive measures and raising funds to help discover the incredible cure.
Through the generous sponsorship of Badger Sport, the TU men's and women's teams are wearing commemorative pink jerseys for their respective matches against Warner University on Saturday, October 3. The women's match is set for 2:00 p.m. while the men's portion of the double will begin at 4:30 p.m.
A silent auction for the commemorative game-worn pink play jerseys will take place during both matches while individuals can also purchase the commemorative sideline game day shirts worn by the coaching staffs. All proceeds will go to the Archbold Foundation for Breast Cancer Patient Support. The Night Hawks raised and presented a $1,000 check last year to the foundation.
Approximately 230,000 women in the U.S. alone will be diagnosed with this disease. Through their pink participation, TU hopes to encourage preventive screening as well as donations toward a cure.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the matches.
