Night Hawks Capture Sun Conference Tournament Championship

Thomas defeated St. Thomas 26-19

The Thomas Night Hawks (16-1, 9-1 SUN) defeated the St. Thomas Bobcats (12-4, 7-3 SUN) in a thrilling game at the TU Soccer Complex.  The victory allows the Night Hawks to repeat as both the Sun Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions in flag football.  For the Night Hawks, they will advance to the NAIA Flag Football Championship, to be held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in Atlanta, GA.  

How It Happened

Thomas scored on their first drive, but it was not easy, as they only had to go 36 yards, but the drive took 11 plays and 6:48 of clock.  An Alexa Wilson to Margarita Peña strike for 15-yards was the largest chunk play during the drive.  Wilson completed a 2-yard pass to Brittney Delva for the touchdown, to put the Night Hawks up 6-0 (conversion failed).

The Night Hawks added to their lead with the help of a Delva interception.  Gaining the ball in the Bobcat red zone, Thomas picked up the 16-yards to for the score.  Wilson competed a pass to Pena for the score (conversion good), TU 13 STU 0.  The bulk of the scoring occurred in the 2nd quarter.  During the period, St. Thomas would not lay down.  The Bobcats covered 48 yards to score their first touchdown (conversion failed), TU 13 STU 6.  Thomas would answer with a seven play drive that saw Wilson complete her longest pass of the day, 27-yards, to Kiera Knight, for the touchdown (conversion good), TU 20 STU 6.  St. Thomas then covered 56 yards in 26 second to cut into the Thomas lead (conversion failed), to set the halftime score at:  Thomas 20 St. Thomas 12.

The Night Hawks would open the 3rd quarter with another touchdown drive, going 56 yards in nine plays.  Wilson hit Kiana Acol, on a 12 yard pass, for the score (conversion failed). Thomas 26, St. Thomas 12.  The Bobcats would use two big plays to cover  63 yard drive for the score (conversion good), Thomas 26 St. Thomas 19.  Defense would dominate the remainder of the game, as each team was able to get to their opponent's red zone, but unable to score.
