The 2022-23 All-Sun Conference Men's Basketball Teams were announced on Thursday as voted on by the league's nine head coaches. This year's teams feature ten first-team selections and ten second-team honorees.
Overall, nine different schools placed at least one player among the group of 20 that make up the first- and second-team all-conference units. This year's teams comprise one fifth year, 11 seniors, five juniors, and three sophomores.
Thomas led all teams with four all-conference honorees, including first-teamers
Mohammed Abubakar and
Jordan Booker. St. Thomas totaled three all-conference selections, all on first-team, in Dalon Dean, Milton Matthews, and Fred Mulbah.
Keiser and Southeastern both had two first-team selections, including Core'von Lott (KU), Justin Tucker (KU), Reggie Mesidor (SEU), and Riley Minix (SEU).
Webber International totaled two all-conference honorees, including first-teamer K'Shun Stokes. At the same time, Ave Maria, Coastal Georgia, and Warner had two second-team all-conference selections, with Florida Memorial rounding out the second team with one selection.
The Sun Conference Specialty Awards for Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, the Rollie Massimino Coach of the Year, and Champion of Character will be announced Friday.
The semifinals of the 2023 Sun Conference Men's Basketball Championship will take place on Friday, February 24, at Southeastern in Lakeland, Fla. Semifinal number one, featuring the second-seeded Thomas Nighthawks versus the third-seeded St. Thomas Bobcats will begin at 5:00 p.m. Game two, featuring top-seeded Southeastern Fire versus the fourth-seeded Webber International Warriors is slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
For Thomas, Booker led the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9) and steals (2.6/gm) was second in assists (6.0/gm) and sixth in free throw percentage (82.9). Abubakar placed sixth in rebounding (7.6/gm) and seventh in field goal persentage (.536). Brown placed seventh in the conference in three-point percentage (.380). Williamson was tenth in steals at 1.3/gm. The Night Hawks are the second seed in the upcoming Sun Conference Basketball Tournament.
