THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas Night Hawks snapped their unlucky streak with a win over Brewton-Parker on Saturday at the TU Gym.
It was a tight contest early, with the game tied at 13 halfway through the first.
Teny Gakdeng broke the tie on an alley-oop jam from
Jonathan Goldson. Then
Eli Curry followed up with a midrange jumper. Next,
Shane Payne came up with a steal and Goldson finished the break with a layup to make it a six-point lead.
The run continued for Thomas as Curry knocked down a three to go up nine with 7:23 left in the half. A quick 8-0 Barons run cut the lead to one, Goldson stole the ball away and sent it ahead to Smith who hit the layup with contact for the and-one.
Brewton-Parker continued to apply pressure and took the lead, but a jumper from Smith put Thomas within one, then on the ensuing possession,
Eli Curry grabbed the miss and fired it ahead to Goldson, who sent it down to a wide-open Je'Hvonni Hogan for the two-hand jam to take the lead as the half came to a close.
The Night Hawks lost the lead coming out of the locker room. However, Curry found Goldson for a three-pointer to regain the advantage. Goldson then hit a pair of free throws to increase the lead to four.
However, the Barons continued to keep the pressure on, but Thomas continued to make shots keeping the margin within six. Later, at the halfway point Brewton-Parker tied the game at 42. But the Night Hawks did regain the lead, thanks to a pair of free throws from Goldson and
Armani Thomas.
With 6:38 to go, the Barons tied the game again, but Payne hit a free throw to take a one-point lead. However, the teams would pull even again before free throws from Goldson and Gakdeng gave Thomas a two-possession lead with 5:16 to go.
After a layup from Brewton-Parker brought them within two, Goldson then knocked down a three to make it a five-point game. Next, Goldson hit a pair of free throws to increase the lead to seven. Then Payne hit a three for the dagger.
Thomas then closed out the game for the 67-60 victory.
Before the game, seniors Hogan, Curry, Thomas and
Nhine Wills were honored before the game as it was the final home game for the four in their Night Hawk careers.
Thomas will be on the road for their next game as they take on Life University at 7:30p.m on Thursday, Feb.19.
