Glover Game-Winning Pick Seals Narrow Win

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Florida Memorial Lions were once again on the brink of a potential upset over the Thomas University flag football team before a game-clinching interception late in the fourth quarter by Freshman Si'Naya Glover sealed a 7-6 win for the Night Hawks Thursday at TU Soccer Complex.

The Green & White (11-1, 7-1 SUN) once again struggled on offense throughout the contest, throwing three interceptions while posting a completion rate under 35%.  One bright spot for TU was the performance of Freshman Quarterback Kiana Acol, throwing 8-for-16 for 95 yards with one touchdown and one interception through the air while posting 16 carries for 79 yards.

Graduate Brittney Delva led the defense with five flag pulls and an interception.  SUN Conference Defensive Player of the Week Janae Scott recorded three flag pulls and a pass breakup.

After Florida Memorial (1-9, 0-9 SUN) saw its opening possession end with a blocked punt by Freshman Jordan Martynowski, the Lions responded with a Vanessa Queen interception on 3rd & Goal on the ensuing possession.

Late in the second quarter, TU was yards away from pay dirt before another possession ended on a 3rd & Goal interception by FMU, this time picked by Thaymiluz Santos.  The turnover built momentum for the Orange & Blue, throwing a 57-yard aerial strike from Ja'Shya Christie to Linsley Francois to give the Lions the first score of the game, 6-0, with one minute left in the first half.  Thomas could not respond in the half's final possession, trailing by six at intermission.

The Night Hawks came out of halftime refocused, putting together an opening drive that lasted over four minutes fueled by big rushing gains from Acol and Freshman Margarita Peña's two receptions of the day to set up a 7-yard score from Acol to Scott to the game 6-6.  Thomas capitalized on the extra-point attempt, as Acol found Scott once more, this time on a quick post route to take a 7-6 lead.

TU struck gold on the very next play, as Delva's 4-yard interception put the Night Hawks back in the red zone with a critical opportunity to extend its lead.  The momentum would quickly fade out, as the Lions once again kept the Night Hawks out of the end zone with a team, third interception picked by Ericka Johnson.

The fourth quarter saw neither team backing down, as Thomas continued to chew clock despite a one-point lead.  Under the two-minute mark, TU had another chance to put the contest away as the Night Hawks drove down the field and into the red zone again before playing conservatively and leaving FMU a little over a minute for one, final possession to potentially win the game.  All hopes for the Lions were dashed when Glover made the interception for Thomas to secure the 7-6 win.

Thomas will close out the regular season Wednesday with a doubleheader showdown against Webber International and Warner.  Kickoff is set to begin at 4 p.m.
