Bears upset No. 20 Thomas

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Ga. - Truett McConnell (Ga.) upset No. 20 Thomas, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at TMU Soccer Complex. The Night Hawks lost for just the third time in their last 13 road matches.

"We have been unable to match the desire and intensity of our opponents," Night Hawk coach Ricky Zambrano said. "Truett (McConnell) earned this victory today."

Thomas (1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Sam Eyes (2) found the back of the net, beating Truett McConnell (4-0-1) goalkeeper Evan Gaffney. However, the Bears scored the next three goals to take a two-goal edge deep into the match.

Victor Clemente (2) scored the first two goals for the home team in the 59th and 65th minutes with assists from Joao Costa and Felipe Nunez, respectively. Jacob Sharp (1) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 81st minute.

Leo Thompson (5) cut the Night Hawks' deficit to one goal in the 85th minute with help from Jack Chambers, but the Green and White were unable to get any closer.

Clemente and Costa each had two shots on goal.

Thompson and Eyes had one shot on goal apiece.

Gaffney (3-0-1) went the distance for the win.

Netminder Lee Howarth (1-2) recorded four stops for Thomas.

The Night Hawks held an edge in corner kicks, 6-1.

Thomas continues its non-conference road swing Friday, Sept. 15, at No. 10 Mobile (Ala.). Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET.
