THOMASVILLE, Ga. - Battling unfavorable elements, the Thomas University men's soccer program scored four times in the final 35 minutes to down the Blue Mountain Christian University Toppers at the TU Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon, 4-1.
The Toppers controlled a majority of the first half, offering a half dozen shots towards
Kameron Kirksey (1-0) in net, and connecting with one in the 24th minute. TU sent shots on goal from
Ethan Moore and
Jake Wright before the halftime intermission, but the Night Hawks still trailed by a tally mark at the half.Â
In the 57th minute, a Topper was ejected on a second yellow card, and Thomas sent added pressure.
Ben O'Connor punched a through ball for
Will Nye, who connected for his second goal of the season to level the match at one apiece.Â
Twice in a five minute span down the stretch,
Charlie Foss showcased flashy footwork and great passes to assist scores for both
Ethan Moore in the 68th frame and
Freddie Pickford in the 73rd. Moore scored his team-leading ninth goal of the year, while Pickford found the back of the net for the first time this season.
With time winding down beyond the 88-minute mark, Thomas jolted the crowd when
Luke Guerrier connected from the corner of the penalty area to
Jake Wright, who finished off the Night Hawk quartet with a bicycle kick. It was Wright's third score of the year.
"As long as it's finding the net, that's all I need," said Wright. "There's still a lot of work to be done, the win mattered more, but it was a cool moment."
"Bit of a roller-coaster, but it was a massive result for us today," said head coach
Billy Jeffery. "We have to be better on the day-to-day, but this is some good momentum for us."
Thomas (5-8, 1-6 SSAC) hits the road on Tuesday, Oct. 6 to take on Xavier University (La.) at Lafreniere Park in New Orleans at 1:00 p.m. CT.Â
