THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that the men's soccer game between the 11th-ranked Thomas University Night Hawks and sixth ranked University of Mobile Rams will be the NAIA Men's Soccer Game of the Week.
The contest, which takes place at Remington Park Soccer Complex on Fri., Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m., will feature two caliber programs. The Night Hawks, who enter the contest with an undefeated 5-0 record, look to take the next step in their 2015 campaign. As back-to-back Sun Conference Tournament Champions and back-to-back NAIA National tournament participants, the Night Hawks return 10 of its 11 starters from the 2014 season. The Night Hawks started the season off by defeating the defending NAIA National Champion and top-ranked Davenport University 3-0. Since then, the Hunter Green and White have defeated Talladega, Middle Georgia State, William Carey, and NCAA Division II opponent and former TSC rival Embry-Riddle. Thomas has surrendered just four goals while scoring 11.
Statistically, Thomas is led by Abt with three goals,
Juan Figueroa and
Lyle Gifford in assists (two), and McFarlane-Barnes with 23 saves.
Mobile enters the contest with a 5-2 record picking up wins against John Brown University, Louisiana College, Southwestern Christian, Houston-Victoria, and (RV) St. Thomas-Houston. Last time out, the Rams fell to Northwestern College 1-0.
To date, the Rams have outscored opponents 13-5 with a game high of six goals against Louisiana. Mobile is led by keeper Elijah Gibson and midfielder Newton Henry. Gibson has been a force between the posts for the Rams. In his seven games of work, the Birmingham, Ala., native has collected 27 saves en route to two shutouts and a .844 save percentage. Henry leads the Rams with five goals and ranks second in the NAIA in game winning goals (3).
On Friday, the two powers square off in what could be a regional contest that previews a potential matchup in the NAIA National Championship Tournament in late November.
As a part of the TU soccer weekend trifecta, the Night Hawks will also host No. 23 Auburn Montgomery on Sun., Sept. 20 at 1:00 p.m. for Youth Soccer Day.
