THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The fourth-seeded Thomas University women's soccer team will open The Sun Conference tournament on Nov. 9 at TU Soccer Complex versus fifth-seeded Webber International. The Lady Night Hawks are currently on a season-long four-match winning streak, including 3-2 win over the TSC regular season champion and 1th-ranked Lady Bees of SCAD-Savannah on Oct. 28.
Thomas and Webber have met once this season, a 4-0 win for the Lady Warriors on Oct. 1 in Babson Park, Fla. The Lady Night Hawks, however, appear to have vastly improved since that early October loss. When TU takes the field on Monday, it will have been nearly a month since the team last experienced defeat.
Thomas' upset win over the Lady Bees solidified home field advantage for one match in the playoffs, but the team will need to solve Webber's high-powered offense in order to earn a spot in the conference semifinals. The Lady Warriors averaged nearly three goals per match in the regular season, including three matches that the team scored five goals or more. Cierra Abundez leads Webber with a whopping 20 goals, which is over 50 percent of the team's yearly total (39).
The Lady Night Hawks defense significantly improved late in the regular season, however, as the team recorded three shutouts in six matches to end the year. A stout defense, coupled with the fact that Webber is extremely one-dimensional on offense, could make Thomas' match with the Lady Warriors much more competitive this time around.
Mackenzie Dolan continues to lead the way offensively for TU with 10 goals, but six goals apiece from
Adrianna Johnson and
Linnea Roivas makes defending the Lady Night Hawks well-rounded goal-scoring attack difficult. Eight different players have scored a goal for Thomas this season.
Should the match turn out to be close as it is projected to be, a key save could be the difference in advancing or going home. TU senior keeper
Sara-Ann Hartley has been terrific this season, as her 109 saves (75.2 percent save rate) makes her arguably the best goalie in the conference.
A win Monday afternoon would give the Lady Night Hawks a fifth consecutive victory. First touch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at TU Soccer Complex. The winning team will advance to the semifinals where they will face TSC regular season champ SCAD-Savannah.
