THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University men's soccer team will open the 2015 Sun Conference Tournament on Nov. 3 versus the Florida Memorial Lions.
The Night Hawks (13-4, 6-3 TSC) will meet FMU for the second time this season. The team defeated the Lions 2-1 on Sept. 25 in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Thomas and Florida Memorial also have recent postseason history, however, as the two teams met in the conference tournament semifinals last year. The Night Hawks won that match 2-0 en route to winning the TSC crown.
Thomas struggled slightly down the final stretch of the regular season, losing two out of three games from Oct. 17 to Oct. 28. During that time the Night Hawks' loss total doubled, as the team lost just two total matches from Aug. 21 to Oct. 15. On a positive note, TU's two losses at the end of the season each came by just a single goal. The team's record in one-goal matches in 2015 is 8-4.
The Night Hawks' opening round opponent put together a respectable 10-7 (5-4 TSC) regular season, but alternated wins and losses over the final six conference games to earn the number six seed.
Florida Memorial was a Top 25 team for its late September clash with Thomas, but losses to Southeastern, Warner, and Keiser over the last three weeks relegated the Lions from the polls.
FMU features a two-headed scoring attack with players Maximiliano Schendfeld and Andres Pratto. Both Schendfeld and Pratto have netted seven goals this season, equaling exactly half of the Lions' scoring output to date (14/28).
Florida Memorial posted a 7-5 record in one-goal matches in 2015, and each of the team's last three losses coming by just a single goal.
Entering tournament play, the Night Hawks are led in scoring by
Severin Abt (9),
Lyle Gifford (7) and
Eric Persson (5).
First touch of the quarterfinal match between Thomas and Florida Memorial is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the TU Soccer Complex in Thomasville.
