No. 18 Thomas University Notches No. 14 William Carey in Overtime Play

Box Score No. 18 Thomas University Nighthawks (1-0) (TSC 0-0) notch No. 14 William Carey (2-1) 2-1 on a Header by Sophomore Jake Slocombe (1G) in the exciting overtime season opener in Hattiesburg, Miss.

After a late start due to weather conditions, the game remained scoreless during the first half as both teams battled through the tough field conditions.  The Crusaders drew first blood when they scored just ten minutes into the second half, taking the 1-0 lead over the Nighthawks.

Thomas didn't back down from the battle as Junior Lyle Gifford (1G) netted a goal, tying the game 1-1 in the 75th minute of play.  The Nighthawks were able to out play the Crusaders for the remainder of the night as they shutdown WCU, forcing the game to OT.

Thomas took the 2-1 victory over William Carey just three minutes into OT when Slocombe headed the assist by Sophomore Antonio Rodriquez (1A) in for the game winning goal.

"The Night Hawks showed a tremendous amount of heart and battle today. We represented our institution with pride," said Head TU Men's Soccer Coach, Ricky Zambrano. "However, the weekend is not done and we now shift our focus to Sundays match."

TU Men's Soccer will be back in play Sunday, August 31, 2014 at 2pm as they faceoff with Northwestern Ohio in Hattiesburg, Miss.
