NAIA #12 St. Thomas University (15-1-1) put an end to a memorable season for TU Women's Soccer (11-6), knocking of the Lady Night Hawks 6-2 in the 2013 Sun Conference Tournament Semi Finals this afternoon in Miami Gardens, FL.
STU, seeded #2 in the tourney, opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the game catching the Lady Night Hawks flat to take the early advantage. The teams settled into play and exchanged possession of the ball throughout the half. St. Thomas made it a two goal game in the 42
nd minute of the half, but TU responded with an unassisted goal by junior
Jenny Hernandez just 1:16 later. One goal game at half, turned in a different direction in the second half when STU made it a 4-1 game with goals in the 55
th and 60
th minutes of the half. Senior midfielder
Carina Spengler converted a penalty kick with 15 minutes to play to make a two goal game but St. Thomas replied with two more goals to put the game out of reach. The physically contested game featured eleven cards between the two teams.
Thomas ends their season having put together their best season since 2004 when the Lady Night Hawks lost in the Region 13 playoffs and finished the season ranked in the NAIA Top 25. TU reeled off a school record seven straight wins and finishes with their highest win total since 2004, while collecting their first TSC post season victory in their two year stint in the league.
Spengler completes the season with 18 goals and one assist, the highest single season goal total for a Lady Night Hawk since Emer McAuley scored 31 and Laura Sullivan scored 18 in 2003. Spengler's 35 career goals ranks top five in program history.
