NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Thomas University women's soccer program closed out its regular season with a rescheduled match against Xavier University on Tuesday afternoon after their initial meeting was delayed due to Hurricane Isaias.
Makenna Casner connected with
Pearl Mortimer in the 84th minute for the senior's 13th score on the year, but two more Gold Rush goals sent XULA over with a 4-1 victory.
Thomas could only muster one first-half shot, while the defense turned away six offerings before the intermission. A strike in the 19th minute gave Xavier a lead into the break, and another in the 56th would double the advantage.
Mortimer added her tally mark late, but Xavier quickly responded with minimal time remaining; goals in the 89th and 90th minute swelled the lead to three. Xavier overwhelmed
Chantelle Thomson (9-5-3) with 17 second-half shots, while the Night Hawks could only send four towards the net in the second period.
Thomson collected ten saves on the match; it's the second double-digit save performance of her season.
Mortimer ends her senior campaign with a double-double, including a team-best 13 goals and second-best 12 assists.
Thomas (9-5-3, 7-4-2) now prepares for the SSAC Championship.
