MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Thomas University Night Hawks overcame a halftime deficit to down the Faulkner University Eagles, 2-1, at Billy Hilyer Stadium on Saturday.
Sergio Rapuano's program (3-3-2, 2-2-1 SSAC) fell behind in the 33rd minute despite early shots on goal from
Jordyn Keene,
Miasandra Mauro, and
Pearl Mortimer.
Down 1-0 in the 54th minute,
Jule Rohleder streaked down the middle of the field and played the ball forward for Mortimer, who then flipped it to
Makenna Casner in the area. With one touch, the sophomore kept her shot on the ground and conected with the back of the net across the left side for her third score of the season to level the match.
Just over seven minutes later, Thomas completed the comeback when Mortimer was fouled at the top of the box.
Matthildur Traustadottir laced the ensuing free kick for her second goal of the year, proving to be the game-winning goal.
Thomas' defense and
Chantelle Thomson (3-3-2) held the lead over the final 29 minutes, while Thomson was only tasked with making one save on the afternoon. Faulkner had plenty of pressure in the area, including six second-half corner kicks, but the Eagles could only amount to five total shots.
The Night Hawks return home on Thursday, Oct. 1 for a 1:00 p.m. match against (RV) University of Tennessee Southern at the TU Soccer Complex, aiming for the program's first win over the Firehawks.
