HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Thomas University men's soccer program opened SSAC conference play against the William Carey University Crusaders, falling 1-0 in a hard-fought contest.
The Night Hawks battled throughout the match and had opportunities to find the equalizer. Edward Sack had a breakaway opportunity in the 37th minute, but the William Carey goalkeeper came up with a save to keep the Night Hawks off the scoreboard.
Thomas University finished the match with five shots, including three on target. William Carey controlled much of the attacking play, recording 33 shots with 13 on target. Goalkeeper Damien Fortin kept the Night Hawks within striking distance, making an impressive baker's dozen saves on the night.
The Night Hawks faced mild adversity after receiving a red card in the 71st minute, forcing Thomas to play a portion of the match a player down.
Thomas (4-3, 0-1 SSAC) will be back on the field on Thursday, Sept. 17, when they return home to the TU Soccer Complex to face ninth-ranked Life University at 4:30 p.m for a conference match.
