Defense prevails as Night Hawks hold off Bobcats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After a week and a half break the Thomas Night Hawks were back in action on Friday, taking on the St. Thomas Bobcats in a SUN Conference matchup.

The game was a defensive struggle as both teams made it difficult for the other to score. The Bobcats started with the ball first and moved down the field making into the redzone off an impressive fourth down pass from Brooke Bogatz to Camryn Campbell. However, on the next play Dyva Jones jumped the route and picked off Bogatz for a 43-yard return to the Bobcat 27 yardline. With the excellent field position, the Night Hawks offense went to work as Keelin Coleman found Janae Scott for a short gain and later found Maddie Hougland to set up first and goal. Unfortunately, Thomas could not punch it in so the drive resulted in a turnover on downs.

The ensuing St. Thomas drive did not even have a chance to go as Scott busted through the line on a delayed blitz and sacked Borgatz in the endzone for the safety. Which became the difference in the contest as either team failed to make it into the endzone for the rest of the game.

The best chance for the Night Hawks to score came early in the second half as Alexa Wilson found Kierra Knight for a 13-yard gain and on the next play Wilson found Knight for a 41 reception to the Bobcat 2-yard line. But disaster stuck as Wilson was picked off by Rayonna Baker to end the drive.

Coleman finished going 13-17 for 68 yards while Wilson went 8-12 for 146 yards, on the defensive end, Scott ended with seven pulls and one sack, Dyva Jones finished with seven tackles of her own and Kaitlyn Herb had three pull and a sack as well.

The Night Hawks will continue their weekend in Miami as they take on Florida Memorial in another conference contest at 12:00pm.
