BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — A ninth-inning rally wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as Thomas fell to Blue Mountain Christian, on Thursday night.
After trailing 11-2 heading into the ninth, Thomas pushed across four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from JT Whatley, but the comeback bid came up short.
Blue Mountain Christian jumped out to a quick start, plating six runs in the first inning and adding five more over the next two frames. The Night Hawks struggled on the mound early, with starter Chase Marsh lasting just one-third of an inning after allowing three earned runs.
Despite the early struggles, reliever Sawyer Smith settled things down for Thomas, working 5 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three.
Offensively, Thomas collected 11 hits, with Whatley leading the way, going 3-for-5 with a double and a homer. Max Pickert added two RBIs, and Seth Waltimyer reached base twice and scored a run.
The Night Hawks return to action tomorrow as they finished with their series with Blue Mountain in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00PM
