MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team had a four run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth before Brewton-Parker scored six runs, capped off by a walkoff, three-run homer that gave the Barons a 12-10 win over the Night Hawks Tuesday evening at BPC Baseball Field.
TU (18-26, 2-16 SUN) registered 12 hits in the contest, led by Redshirt Freshman
Cameron Rosario (3-for-5) and Sophomore
Turner Maddox (2-for-4). Sophomore Right-Hander
Bradley Peacock got his sixth start of the season, allowing runs off three hits with two strikeouts in two and one-third innings. The Green & White saw a variety of pitchers on the mound, with no player lasting more than two and two-third innings.
After BPC (17-24, 10-8 SSAC) scored the first run, Thomas tied the game in the top of the second with
Nick Talpa's second RBI of the season. With the bases loaded an inning later, the Green & White took its first lead of the game, 2-1, when Maddox cashed in on a run from a double=play groundout from Freshman
Jean Pool Checo.
The Barons tied the contest 2-2 in the bottom of the third thanks to Taz Worrell's baserunning, stealing two bases to set up a RBI double.
Thomas responded in the next two innings with five, unanswered runs to jump out to a 7-2 lead, highlighted by two RBIs from Maddox in that span. The sizeable lead would not last, however, as the Barons used the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to score two pairs of runs to cut the Night Hawks' lead to 7-6 heading into the seventh.
Following a scoreless Inning 7, TU's bats came alive in the eighth as a Checo sacrifice fly and 2RBI single from Rosario extended the lead to 10-6.
The bottom of the ninth proved to be a struggle for Thomas. After a hit-by-pitch brought home a run to trim the lead to three and kept the bases loaded, Freshman Right-Hander
Brandon Steele (1-1) was called upon to close for the third, consecutive contest. Instead, the Barons took advantage of the Ocoee, Fla. native, hitting a 2RBI single on the first at-bat before the three-run home by Jacob Mantooth ended the contest, giving the Barons a 12-10 win.
