Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Thomas University baseball team would not let an early deficit define the contest's outcome Wednesday night, as the Night Hawks battled back from a 6-0 deficit to steamroll Edward Waters 16-7 at James P. Small Memorial Park and snap a nine-game skid.
Wednesday's win marks the first time since 2014 that TU (16-24, 0-15 SUN) completed a regular season sweep over the Tigers (17-21, 5-3 SIAC). The Night Hawks matched its third-highest hitting total (14) of the season while holding EWC to 13. Redshirt Junior
Anthony Dorak had the quite the day from the dish, leading all hitters with a perfect 4-for-4 performance highlighted by three RBIs. Sophomore Dylan Robertson (2-0) pitched five innings and allowed one run off one hit while fanning four.
Thomas struggled out of the gate, picking up one out while the Tigers proceeded to build a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Starting pitcher
Owen Simonds was pulled early in the second for Robertson before Edward Waters extended its lead to 6-0.
In the third inning, Freshman
Matthew Delay Jr. got on base via hit by pitch as the Tigers picked up two outs in the first three at-bats. The Altamonte Springs, Fla. picked up TU's lone stolen base of the night before advancing two bases off a hit from Sophomore
Turner Maddox, bringing home the Green & White's first run of the night. Back-to-back RBIs from Dorak and Sophomore
Luis Torres, along with an EWC error, cut the Tigers' lead to one run (6-5).
The Night Hawks would take the lead for good one inning later, tacking on another five runs thanks to more RBIs from Dorak and Torres, along with a 2RBI double from Redshirt Senior
Brad Toxen to take a 10-6 lead.
In the fifth inning, TU extended its lead with three more runs with a sacrifice fly from Redshirt Junior
Bradley Fleenor before Maddox and Freshman
Khadin Bastian recorded RBI singles to push the Green & White's lead to seven runs (13-6).
After a RBI double from Edward Waters in the top of the sixth trimmed the lead to 13-7, Thomas would go on to score the game's final three runs. Delay's sacrifice fly brought home Dorak in the bottom of the sixth before Fleenor finished off Edward Waters with a "bang," a two-run moon blast in the eighth inning that gave the Night Hawks a 16-7 win over the Tigers.
