Getting it Right: Thomas Staying Focused vs. EWC

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team returns to Jacksonville, Fla. Wednesday to face Edward Waters College for a second time in 2022 in non-conference play.

The month of April has been extremely unkind to the Night Hawks (15-24, 0-15 SUN), as the team is still in search of its first win since March 22nd.  Thanks to the schedule flexibility of EWC (17-20, 5-3 SIAC), TU will have at least one more guaranteed midweek matchup in an effort to break a nine-game losing streak.

The Green & White come off a heartbreaking series sweep to Ave Maria that saw Thomas one hit shy of potentially taking at least one game from the Gyrenes.  While Redshirt Freshman Cameron Rosario played in just two of the three games, the Jacksonville, Fla. native performed well, hitting a combined 4-for-7 that included a double with two RBIs and a stolen base.

Edward Waters hit a hot streak in late March before dropping four of its last six games.  The Tigers will look to avenge its 4-3 defeat to Thomas earlier in the season after the Night Hawks scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning before clinching the win with a game-ending double play.

As a whole, the Orange & Purple are batting .284, highlighted by the play of Keilin Washington.  The senior boasts a hitting average of .339, complemented by 22 RBIs, 36 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases.  Payton Shubert (.309) continues to be the Tigers' RBI leader (31) and a staple in the hitting lineup.

On the mound, EWC enters Wednesday's contest with a 6.03 team ERA, as Alexander Davila and Will Valenti have been the primary pitchers.  Davila holds a personal ERA of 4.44, allowing 50 hits, 30 runs with 25 earned and fanning 40 while Valenti has a 5.53 ERA, giving up 32 runs off 49 hits and striking out 41.

Wednesday will mark the 13th, all-time meeting between the Night Hawks and Tigers, as TU leads the series 8-5.  Thomas will attempt to sweep Edward Waters in the regular season for only the second time in program history.

First pitch at James P. Small Memorial Park is slated for 5 p.m.  Fans unable to attend the contest can follow the live action by accessing the links below:
