THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team will travel to Miami Gardens, Fla. this weekend for a three-game, SUN Conference series against Florida Memorial. Friday will feature the doubleheader day while Game Three will be held Saturday.
The Night Hawks (15-18, 0-9 SUN) head into the climactic month of its 2022 schedule, as TU has 15 more conference games to get back on track for a spot in the SUN Conference tournament. Despite Middle Georgia State's sweep over the Green & White last time out, Thomas has shown signs of fight against nationally-ranked teams, holding a lead as large as four runs over the Knights.
While the Night Hawks are the only remaining team in SUN to not have four or more conference wins on the season, TU's conference record has been misleading as the Green & White have only played the top three teams in the conference in #1 Southeastern, #10 St. Thomas, and #24 Keiser. With a manageable slate down the stretch, Thomas will look to fly back into postseason contention only down four games in the standings.
TU heads into the weekend hitting .282 as a team, with Sophomore
Turner Maddox as the batting average leader (.370). After setting the program record for the longest streak of games with a hit (20), the native of Thomaston, Ga. saw the streak come to an end in Cochran, Ga. against MGA. Freshman
Matthew Delay Jr. (.368) heads into the weekend with hitting momentum, coming off a week in which the Altamonte Springs, Fla. native batted an overall .526.
On the mound, Freshman Right-Hander
Dustin Letchworth (2-3) holds a 3.81 ERA on the season, allowing 21 total runs with 11 earned on 32 hits while fanning 21 in 26 full innings pitched.
Florida Memorial (14-15, 4-8 SUN) has now won three of its last four contests, most recently coming off a 6-3 win over Florida National Thursday, as the Lions head into the weekend on a three-game win streak at home. At the plate, FMU is led by slugger Rohandry Javier (.408), recording 13 RBIs and a triple while boasting a .493 slugging percentage and a .555 on-base clip. Javier additionally leads the Lions in stolen bases (20) on the season. Axel Gomez and Nathan Harris both hold 25 RBIs apiece.
On the bump, Max Charnin (3-3) holds a 5.71 ERA, allowing 36 hits, 28 runs with 22 earned, and has thrown 34 strikeouts in 34.2 innings pitched while the other primary pitcher, Juan Raul Hernandez (3-3), has a 6.95 ERA, giving up 26 runs on 40 hits and fanning 21 in 33.2 innings.
Thomas leads the overall series 14-7 against the Lions and will look to secure wins in Miami Gardens for the first time since 2016.
First pitch at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field is set for Friday at Noon, as Saturday's single contest will also begin at Noon. Links to follow the live action for all three games are listed below:
