Box Score THOMASVILE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team appeared to have kept pace with Indiana Tech, but pairs of Warriors' scores in the seventh and eighth innings were too much for the Night Hawks to overcome, falling to IT 8-4 Saturday evening at Varnedoe Stadium to end a five-game win streak for the Green & White.
For the fourth time this season, TU (13-10, 0-6 SUN) finished with the same amount of hits as the opposition, notching eight apiece with Indiana Tech (8-9). Freshman Left-Hander
Riley Fisher (2-4) pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs in two hits with five strikeouts.
Saturday's loss marked the third time this season Thomas suffered defeat with the better team batting average on the day. Sophomore
Turner Maddox went 2-for-5 at the plate, while four other Night Hawks batted .333 in the contest.
After two quick outs to start the bottom of the second, the Green & White worked quickly to get runners on base with Redshirt Junior
Chandler Skelly's hit-by-pitch before Freshman
Michael Sowers hit a double to left field to put men in scoring position. Maddox followed Sowers' double with a 2RBI single to give Thomas a 2-0 lead before the Thomaston, Ga. native's gamble to take second in the same play backfired, allowing the Warriors to get the final putout and end the inning.
Slowly but surely, Indiana Tech spent the next four innings recording a run apiece to gradually overtake TU and hold a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. Freshman
Khadin Bastian began building momentum for the Night Hawks with a leadoff single before Freshman
Matthew Delay Jr. flied out to right field, setting up Redshirt Junior
Anthony Dorak's RBI triple to pull within one of the Warriors (4-3). Following Redshirt Senior
Brad Toxen's groundout hit, Thomas tied the game 4-4 with a RBI double from Redshirt Junior
Bradley Fleenor.
IT responded in the top of the seventh by loading the bases with its three, leadoff hitters to set up two, groundout RBI to retake a 6-4 lead. One inning later Indiana Tech, Manuel Ascanio belted a two-run shot over the left field wall to extend the Warriors' lead 8-4.
The Green & White attempted to build a comeback run in the ninth, putting its first two batters on bases. After a Sowers' strikeout, Maddox delivered a grounder to shortstop that nearly became a double play for Indiana Tech, getting the putout throw at second before Maddox beat the throw at first. With runners on first and third, TU's luck would run out, as a Bastian strikeout sealed the 8-4 win for the Warriors.
