THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball began the 2022 season in full force, taking Game One of its three-game series with Talladega College 10-3 Saturday evening at Varnedoe Stadium.
The bats of the Night Hawks (1-0) came alive, outhitting the Tornadoes 15-8. Redshirt Freshman
Cameron Rosario was the only batter to finish perfect at the plate (3-for-3), as the Florida A&M transfer recorded two runs with three RBIs.
TU's pitching staff was as equally impressive on opening day, as the Night Hawks won for the first time in program history using only true, freshmen pitchers. Left-Handed Pitcher
Riley Fisher (1-0) picked up his first, collegiate win after recording seven strikeouts and allowing one earned run off five hits in five and one-third innings.
After the Tornadoes (0-1) scored the opening run in the first inning, the Night Hawks responded with eight, unanswered runs. After Redshirt Senior
Brad Toxen stole second base in the bottom of the first, Sophomore
Luis Torres converted on a game-tying RBI double. TU took the lead the next inning when Freshman
Michael Sowers delivered an RBI triple that brought home Freshman
Khadin Bastian. Rosario followed the at-bat with an RBI of his own to extend the lead to two (3-1). An error from TC moments later would allow Rosario to take advantage of the miscue and scored to bring the score 4-1.
TU's fourth inning was highlighted by a string of four, consecutive hits that produced three more runs to bring Thomas' lead to five runs (6-1).
After another Rosario RBI gave the Night Hawks its largest lead of the day (7-1), 'Dega responded with two runs in the top of the sixth off of two hits before the Green & White matched the Tornadoes' two runs the next half inning.
Right-Handed Pitcher
Justin Montanez closed out the contest for TU, allowing no earned runs while picking up three strikeouts in the final two and one-third innings.
