Night Hawks Prep for Midweek Contest vs. EWC

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. Tuesday to take on the Tigers of Edward Waters College for a non-conference singleheader.

The Night Hawks (7-8, 0-6 SUN) are on a mission to snap a six-game skid after taking on two, nationally-ranked opponents in back-to-back weekends.  With a break from SUN Conference play, the Green & White have an opportunity to focus on finding its hitting spark once more, as well as strengthening its play on the mound.

Thomas' hitting is led by Freshman Matthew Delay Jr. (.390) and Sophomore Turner Maddox (.370).  Delay's eight doubles lead the conference on the season and is a 12th-best in NAIA.  Five Night Hawks currently hit .300 or better on the young 2022 season.

After allowing 11 hits a game in the series against #17 St. Thomas, the pitching staff is eyeing Tuesday's contest as its rebound game to get back on track.  Freshman Right-Hander Anthony Menendez (0-2) has seen an average of two and two-third innings on the mound, allowing under three hits and two earned runs an appearance.

Edward Waters (4-9) comes off a series win over Marian University, winning its last two contests 8-7 and 2-1.  At the plate, the Tigers are led by Anthony Roman (.320), Leonel Garcia (.292), and Payton Shubert (.265).  Garcia leads EWC with eight RBIs and owns one of two home runs by the Tigers in 2022.  Shubert has been in the Tigers' top third of the batting lineup, posting 10 runs and six RBIs.

EWC could look to Will Valenti, Alexander Davila, or Joseph Eischen to start against Thomas.  Valenti holds a 4.50 ERA, allowing six runs in 11 hits with nine strikeouts in 12 total innings pitched.  Davila has seen the most time on the mound (13.2 innings) but holds an 8.56 ERA on the season.  Eischen's 15 strikeouts leads the Tigers on the pitching staff, in addition to allowing just five runs in nine hits in nearly 13 innings on the mound.

While TU leads the overall series against EWC (7-5), the Night Hawks have dropped three of the last four contests to the Tigers.  Tuesday's meeting will mark the first time the two ball clubs have met in nearly three years.

First pitch at James P. Small Memorial Park is set for 5 p.m.  Fans can follow the live action through our stat link below:
