THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University baseball team is back at home for another The Sun Conference three-game series this weekend, hosting Florida Memorial University. Day One will feature a doubleheader against the Lions while Day Two will consist of one game.
TU (10-16, 0-6 TSC) have now won six of its last seven contests after finding its stride at the RussMatt Invitational and sweeping Florida National last week. Freshman
Turner Maddox is a combined 8-for-12 at the plate in the previous three contests. Fellow Freshman
Jayson Zmejkoski found similar success last week, batting nearly .500 since playing Dordt. As a whole, the Hunter Green & White have held batting averages of .350 or more in five of its last seven contests.
To say the pitching staff for the Night Hawks is like a carousel is putting things mildly; six pitchers have seen at least 11 or more innings at the mound on the season. Recently, Redshirt Junior
Dillon Rutland has made an impact in just nine and two-third innings, allowing a total of two earned runs in six hits and four strikeouts. Freshman
John Steward comes off his best performance at the mound, recording nine strikeouts while only allowing two earned runs in seven hits in six innings pitched against Florida National.
FMU (10-9, 3-6 TSC) comes off series wins over both Voorhees College and Bryant & Stratton College. The hitting game is actively led by Axel Gomez, holding a batting average of .383 and bringing in 10 RBIs. Rohandry Javier leads the Lions in Stolen Bases, grabbing a perfect 7-for-7 on the season.
Florida Memorial's pitching unit is led by primary starters Rafael Fernandez (2-1) and Juan Hernandez (1-2), who both average just under six innings a game. Fernandez has allowed 18 earned runs in 24 hits and recorded 18 strikeouts with an opponent batting average of .264. Hernandez has also allowed 18 earned runs but has given up 28 hits with 16 strikeouts and a .275 batting average.
While the Night Hawks hold a very slim lead in the teams' overall series 8-7, the Lions have won five of the last six contests against the Hunter Green & White.
First pitch at Varnedoe Stadium is slated for 1 p.m. Fans can follow the series live by clicking on the links below:
