THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University Men's basketball team begins its journey back to the SUN Conference tournament Tuesday evening, as the Night Hawks travel to Mount Vernon, Ga. to face the Brewton-Parker College Barons in non-conference action.
Since the team's stinging defeat to St. Thomas that ended its season back in February, TU has continued to strengthen its squad, adding veteran transfers like Guards
Reggie Wright and
Ijon Owens, along with fifth-year Forward
Victor Tshiona from Montreat College. The Charlotte, N.C. native's presence will look to bolster TU's rebounding chances, as the Night Hawks finished the season with SUN's fewest average offensive and defensive boards a contest.
The Night Hawks boast a plethora of returners, including Senior Guards
Jordan Booker,
Trint Bryant, and
Tim Williamson, all of whom finished as TU's top three points leaders per game, respectively. Booker comes off a season in which the Powder Springs, Ga. native finished as the NAIA's leader in Steals (102) and seventh all-time in the SUN Conference. Booker also finished 2020-21 as the conference's top Assists leader, averaging 4.4 a game. Fifth-year Forward
Desean Enzor comes off a senior season in which the Tallahassee, Fla. native played half of the season, averaging just under 11 points a game and shooting 45% from the field.
Thomas as a whole comes off a season in which team scored 71.2 points a game and has allowed an average of 73.4 points. The Night Hawks also knew how to create extra chances, forcing nearly 17 turnovers a game.
Brewton-Parker (0-1) began its season the way they finished most of last year: losing by double digits. The Barons fell to Warner 87-67 Saturday in Lake Wales, Fla., despite shooting 49.1% from the field. One silver lining in the team's season-opening setback was Antrell Williams's 21-point night, shooting 53% while recording seven rebounds and four steals.
The Barons did not have as much of a productive 2020-21 season as the Night Hawks, averaging just over 64 points a game in a five-win season. The Barons return its lead scorer in Benjamin Ross (13.2 points), who averaged 49% from the floor and 54% from long range. The Atlanta, Ga. native has also averaged over three assists in the previous campaign.
Thomas leads the overall series against the Barons 8-2, winning the last six contests. The Night Hawks initially planned to play BPC for the team's opener last season, but the game was canceled due to COVID issues.
Tipoff at Gillis Gymnasium is set for 6 p.m.
