Jake Webb went 3-for-4 at the plate as Thomas University fell to No. 1 Southeastern University, 6-5, Thursday night at Ted A. Broer Stadium.
Down by two in the top of the ninth, pinch hitter
Raines Plant reached on an SEU fielding error, and advanced to second as Webb hit an infield single.
Jarrett Fowler came in to pinch run for Webb, and both Plant and Fowler advanced a base on a wild pitch. Shortstop
Chase Hinson sent a sac fly to center, scoring Plant and advancing Fowler. With one out,
Landon Boyette flied out to right, but Fowler – the tying run – was thrown out at home by the SEU right fielder.
TU dropped to 24-22 overall and 10-12 in the Sun Conference while SEU improved to 45-8, 18-4.
After SEU scored one in the first, Thomas plated two in the third, then the Fire tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Each team added a run in the sixth, then SEU scored three more in the seventh. Thomas put up one in the eighth, and one in the ninth.
Webb connected on a double and a pair of base hits and Hinson was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, recorded two RBI and scored once.
Jorge Meran struck out three but allowed six runs, four earned, from seven hits in hits 6.0-inning start.
Hassan Westbrook came in for 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, and struck out two batters.
TU and SEU return to the field Saturday for the final double header of the regular season. First pitch of game one is at noon, immediately followed by game two.
