Box Score THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Thomas University women's soccer team defeated Johnson & Wales University, 2-1, with a last-second game winner Saturday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex, capturing the sixth and final seed in the Sun Conference Tournament.
The teams will have a rematch on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Miami Shores, Fla., in the quarterfinals of the league's postseason tournament. The winner will face regular season champion Keiser.
Prior to the match, the Night Hawks honored four seniors in the program –
Dana Blough,
Jen Clyde,
Barbara Woll and student assistant Angie Gutierrez.
"Today was an amazing day, start to finish," said Head Coach
Julie Orlowski. "We knew before the match our fate was in our hands and that is all we wanted. We celebrated our seniors in first class fashion, and then we battled to give them another game."
TU attacked JWU's net with 30 shots, to the Wildcats' 12. Thomas also took 12 corners, while JWU only had three.
After 71 scoreless minutes, Thomas broke the stalemate. TU's first goal was a result of relentless pressure to not allow the ball to be cleared after a corner.
Hadas Prawer kept the play alive with her technical skill, and connected with
Jana Pastorek, who found
Lexie McDaniel for the goal.
Then seven minutes later, JWU tied the match, ultimately sending the game into overtime.
As time expired at the end of the first overtime,
Payton Walton gathered the ball near the touch line, then sent a long ball into the 6-yard box. The defenders collapsed on
Emily Linscer, who let the ball play through to
Analeice Wilkes, and she carried the ball over the line as time expired.
Jordin Sanchez made three saves in 100 minutes in goal for TU.
