MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -
Alexis Moody tallied a career-high 12 points off the bench on 6-of-8 shooting despite Thomas' 75-52 loss at Florida Memorial in Sun Conference (TSC) play Saturday inside FMU Wellness Center. The Lions snapped a three-game losing streak.
"We didn't allow them to get hot shooting the ball and forced a lot of turnovers, but rebounding hurt us today," Night Hawks coach
Myron Brown said. "They controlled the boards, and that was the primary difference in the contest."
A
Samantha Gilbert layup opened the scoring for Thomas (6-13, 2-11 TSC), but Florida Memorial (12-8, 7-5 TSC) took the lead for good less than two minutes later courtesy of a Victoria Jones bucket in the paint which triggered a 19-6 spurt. The Lions led 26-18 at the end of the first quarter.
Defense dominated the second 10 minutes, as both teams scored a combined 13 points in the second period. Neither team scored for nearly a five-minute stretch.
Adrianna Spencer and
De'Audra Copeland tallied the only layups for the Night Hawks, who cut their deficit to five at the 4:18 mark, but Florida Memorial scored the final eight points of the frame to take a 35-22 advantage into intermission.
Each team nearly traded scores in the third quarter, and the Lions led 56-40 heading into the fourth. Florida Memorial outscored the Green and White 19-12 in the final stanza for the final tally.
Danielle Bailey (23), Ashley Henry (20) and Abreona Cabell (20) combined for 63 points in the win. Henry also pulled down 16 rebounds in a double-double performance. Cabel dished out five assists and came up with four steals.
Moody also hauled in six rebounds and totaled 12 of her team's 28 points from reserves.
Kriza Allen finished with 11 points, while Spencer added eight.
Pkacia Johnson dished out five assists. Allen and
Arianna Anderson each came up with three steals.
Florida Memorial struggled shooting, going just 41.2 percent (28-of-68) overall, 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from 3 and 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the stripe, but won the battle of the boards 53-33, including 28-10 on the offensive glass, leading to 26 second chance points. The Lions also converted 23 Night Hawk miscues into 24 points.
Thomas shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) overall and forced 18 turnovers.
The Night Hawks final TSC road game is Thursday, Feb. 1, at Warner (Fla.) at 5:30 p.m. ET.
