MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -Â Thomas earned its third-straight win over Florida Memorial with a 74-65 Sun Conference (TSC) victory Saturday afternoon inside FMU Wellness Center. The Night Hawks ended a four-game skid in conference play and have won seven of 10 all-time meetings.
The Green and White improved to 5-0Â this season when allowing 66 points or fewer.
Thomas (10-11, 5-8 TSC) shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the floor and 10-of-16 from the stripe in the second half to turn a 31-30 halftime deficit into a 50-39 advantage at the 11:24 mark following a
Katrell Myers jumper. The second-half lead swelled to as many as 14, 68-54, with 1:42 to go after
JaVoris Cooks converted the first of two free throws.
D.J. Roulhac's only bucket from distance at the 18:05 mark put Thomas in the driver's seat for good.
"I told the guys in practice Friday that they had played pretty good basketball over the last few games, but the problem was we weren't finishing games," Night Hawks coach
Brent Crews said. "The ball is not always going to bounce the right way but control what we can control. That is playing with effort, together and smart. We did all three today, and I'm so proud of the growth of the team.
"It was a very special day for us. We dedicated the game two special friends of ours - Dr. Wade Berstler and his wife, Helen. Wade is a great mentor for our guys since 2014. His wife is fighting a tough battle with dementia, and our guys wanted to play for them today."
Myers finished with 17 points and six rebounds off the bench. He was 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
Willie Holloway pumped in 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from within the arc plus three blocks. Cooks had 10 points.
Jakari Bush scored seven points. Holloway and
Jalen Bonds each pulled down seven rebounds.Â
Tyrese Mapp led Florida Memorial (11-8, 5-7 TSC) in scoring with 17 points and seven rebounds. Davon Williams added 16 points and eight boards. Travis Mitchell had 13 points off the bench. Omar Outar netted nine points and eight assists.
Thomas shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) overall and made more free throws (15; 15-of-24) than the Lions attempted (13; 7-of-13). The Night Hawks held an edge in rebounds (43-38), points in the paint (32-28), points off turnovers (13-12) and bench points (33-15).
The Night Hawks trailed for the bulk of the first half but forced a tie at 23 and then took a two-point advantage after five-straight Holloway points despite trailing 17-9 less than eight minutes into the affair.
Thomas' final TSC road game is Thursday, Feb. 1, at No. 23 Warner (Fla.) at 7:30 p.m. ET.
