MOBILE, Ala. - No. 12 Mobile (Ala.) defeated Thomas, 3-0, at The Jungle. Saturday evening's contest was the final game for both teams in the second annual The Sun Conference/Southern States Challenge.
After a lightning delay stalled kickoff by two hours, Colleen Kennedy (8) broke a scoreless tie in the 25th minute for Mobile (6-1).
"We certainly weathered our share of the storm, especially in the first half," Night Hawks' coach
Julie Orlowski said. "We really displayed our heart and battled very well."
Nikole Cruz (2) made the score 2-0 off a rebound from eight yards out following one of
Kara Houston's four saves in the match. The final goal came in the 86th minute by Cayla Hebert (5).
Cruz and Hebert ended with two shots on goal apiece.
Olivia Taylor,
Taylor Hults and
Kayla Folse each had a shot on goal for Thomas (3-2-1), which was minus two starters for a second-straight game due to illness.
Rams' goalkeeper Antonia Bauer (6-1) recorded three saves in 90 minutes.
Houston (3-2-1) played the entire match in net for the Green and White.
The Night Hawks fell to 0-4 all-time in the tournament, with all four loses coming to ranked opponents.
"We play teams like Mobile to test us and point out our weaknesses going into conference play," Orlowski commented. "We have a few things to sort out for sure, but I am very proud of how hard we fought for each other."
The Sun Conference action begins for Thomas on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Saint Thomas (Fla.). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
