LAKE WALES, Fla. -Â Thomas'
Katrell Myers posted a double-double Wednesday evening, leading all players in points (21) and rebounds (10), but Webber International (Fla.) defeated the Night Hawks, 89-83, in Sun Conference (TSC) play inside Turner Athletic Center on the campus of Warner (Fla.).
"Their bench players really stepped up for them," Green and White coach
Brent Crews said. "This was a tough loss that we'll have to move beyond because we face some very good teams in the next few weeks."
Four Webber International (4-5, 2-3 TSC) bench players scored in double figures. Tommie Luke posted 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Johnathan Childs had 17 points, all in the second half, seven rebounds and four blocks. Nikita Orap scored 16 points, while Joseph Serrano had 10 points and seven boards.Â
Obi Romero pulled down nine rebounds for the Warriors.
Myers was perfect (10-of-10) from the free throw line.
JaVoris Cooks added 17 points and four assists.
Jalen Bonds had eight points on 4-of-7 shooting and six rebounds off the bench.
Keion Peoples and
Johnnel Ginnie each tallied seven points. Peoples and
D.J. Roulhac each had three steals.Â
The Warriors shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor, 9-of-22 from 3 and 28-of-35 from the line, including 19-of-24 in the final 20 minutes.
Thomas (5-7, 2-4 TSC) shot 42.9 percent (30-of-70) overall, 7-of-20 from beyond the arc and 16-of-27 from the stripe, including 11-of-20 after halftime.
Wednesday's game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes. The Night Hawks used an 8-0 run in which Cooks canned two treys to lead 29-21 at the 4:25 mark of the first half. Thomas led 37-35 at intermission and expanded its edge to five less than a minute into the second period courtesy of a Peoples trey, but with the contest tied at 52 midway through the half, Webber International outscored the Night Hawks 27-17 to grab a 79-69 advantage with 2:26 to go. Thomas closed the gap to one possession, 86-83, with 16 seconds left following an
Eric Johnson steal and old-fashioned 3-point play, but after Serrano converted the first of two free throws to push the margin back to four points, a Night Hawk turnover was followed by two Serrano made free throws for the final margin.
Wednesday's game was moved to Warner due to ongoing renovations to Webber International's Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Thomas travels to Samford on Friday for its final exhibition this year and second against a NCAA Division I foe. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET.
