WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - For the second year in a row, No. 2-seed Keiser (Fla.) escaped No. 3-seed Thomas in a shootout in The Sun Conference (TSC) Men's Soccer Championship semifinals, sponsored by Commerce Bank. The Seahawks advanced to the title match on penalty kicks, 7-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Arrigo-Veceillo Field.
"Today was a very tough match against a quality opponent," Night Hawk coach
Ricky Zambrano said. "Unfortunately we came up a little short."
Amine Meski (6) gave Keiser (8-4-1) a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute following a Thomas (8-7-3) turnover in its own third of the field.
Sam Eyes (5) tied the affair in the 86th minute on a shot from 25 yards out that went through the hands of Seahawk netminder Lee Clark.
Thomas outshot Keiser, 14-5, in regulation. The Seahawks had five shots in the extra 20 minutes but did not score, sending the match into a shootout.
After a Thomas miss, Thomas Dawson gave the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage. The next two shooters for each team converted their attempts, giving Keiser a 3-2 lead. After Eyes placed his shot in the left side of the net past Keiser goalkeeper Nicolas Gomez, Night Hawk netminder and reigning TSC Defensive Player of the WeekÂ
Lee Howarth denied consecutive attempts byÂ
Ahmet Brown and Meski, leaving the shootout tied at 3-3 as it went to a sudden death attempt. The next three shooters for each side, including Thomas'
Mark Lescher,
Malcom Frago Mayers and
Garrett Dunton, scored their sudden death attempt. However, a Thomas miss was followed by a Randy Obiukwu make, sending the Seahawks to the title match at 13th-ranked and top-seed Saint Thomas (Fla.) on Friday.
Meski ended with two shots on goal.
Eyes, reigning TSC Offensive Player of the Week
Jesper Svall,
Richard Slaney and
Myke Zamor each had a shot on goal.
Clark had three stops in 110 minutes.
Howarth (6-3-2) made four saves in 110 minutes.
Thomas outshot Keiser in the match, 14-10.
A total of 35 fouls and 11 cautions were issued between the two teams, and the Night Hawks spent the final 23:38 a man down due to a red card.
Tuesday was the final match for eight Thomas seniors - Svall, Slaney, Dunton,Â
Billy Jeffery,Â
Samuel Valencia,Â
Jonathan Lopez,Â
Kelly Botha andÂ
Francesco Russo.
"These eight men have been great ambassadors for our university," Zambrano said. "What they have meant to our campus and the Thomasville community is indescribable. They have accomplished many great feats on the field during their careers in our program, and I know they will do even greater things off it in the years to come."
