Fallin's Barbeque Postgame Report - Voorhees
THOMASVILLE, Ga. - Thomas outscored Voorhees (S.C.) 19-8 in the third quarter, lifting the Night Hawks to a 71-57 win Tuesday evening inside TU Gymnasium. The Green and White improve to 2-1 all-time against the Tigers, including 2-0 at home.
"It was a gutty performance," Night Hawk coach
Myron Brown said. "I think we played better in the second half."
Jewel Montisano and
Kriza Allen each scored 14 points for Thomas (3-1) to lead four players in double figures. The mark was a career-high for Montisano, who came off the bench to drain three treys. Allen, who has scored in double figures in six of the last seven contests, also dished out six assists.
Samantha Gilbert scored 12 points for a second-straight game, tying a career-high, on 6-of-12 shooting.
Dymon Brown had 11 points.
"Sometimes I hit shots...sometimes I don't, and you kind of have to be able to adjust," Gilbert said. "If I'm not hitting my shots from outside the arc, then I will to try to adjust and go to the basket, which is what I attempted and succeeded at doing today. I'm using my teammates as well. They're a big part of it too...my teammates always have my back."
De'Audra Copeland narrowly missed a double-double, ending with nine points and 13 rebounds, which tied a career-high, including eight on the offensive glass.
Alexis Moody grabbed seven boards, while Allen, Brown and
Alisha Clayton each hauled in five.Â
Thomas forced 25 turnovers and turned them into 26 points. M. Brown's team won the battle of the boards 53-37, including 22-9 on the offensive glass, leading to 18 second chance points. The Night Hawks outscored the Tigers in the paint 36-20 and 22-9 on the fastbreak.Â
"The key for us is to capitalize on those rebounds," M. Brown said. "It's great to get the offensive rebound and have second chance opportunities, but if you don't score off of those, then it negates all the hard work you did to get that offensive rebound."
Voorhees (1-8) scored the first eight points of the game before Thomas answered with a 12-0 run. Allen scored the first five points of the spurt, which was capped off by a Montisano 3-pointer at the 2:28 mark of the first quarter. Nijah Davis made a bucket from distance with 50 seconds left in the frame, but Thomas led 16-14 after the first 10 minutes.
The Night hawks led by eight points three times in the second quarter but only by one, 32-31, at the break after the Tigers outscored the Green and White 10-3 in the final 3:32. Â
A tie and two lead changes occurred in the first 3:14 of the third quarter, but a
Daycia Bandy fastbreak layup with 6:46 left triggered a quick 6-0 Night Hawk spurt. M. Brown's squad scored the final nine points in the last 2:42 period and took a 51-39 edge into the final 10 minutes.
The Night Hawk run stretched to 11-0 when Montisano hit a short jumper 21 seconds into the fourth quarter. Thomas' largest lead of the night, 17 points, came with 2:20 on the clock after Copeland made the second of two free throws.
The Tigers shot just 29.4 percent (10-of-34) in the final 20 minutes. After going 7-of-11 from 3 in the first half, Voorhees was just 2-of-9 in the second.
Davis finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. D'Ariel Walker and Ladazha Cole added 13 and 12 points, respectively, in the loss. However, the three players combined to shoot just 14-of-36 from the field but were 8-of-17 from beyond the arc. Walker committed 10 turnovers.
Thomas steps out of conference Monday, Nov. 27, for an exhibition at Georgia Southern, a NCAA Division I member. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
