ABOUT THOMAS
The Night Hawks are coming off a 6-2 win over Warner (Fla.) on Saturday in conference play at TU Soccer Complex. Five different Night Hawks scored in their sixth-straight win in the series.
Salvador Marin totaled two goals and one assist for the Green and White, while Leo Thompson and Malcom Frago Mayers each had one goal and two assists.
Thomas scored five-straight goals to open the match, starting in the 28th minute when a Thompson header tickled the twine past Warner (4-4-3, 3-2-1 TSC) netminder Christian de Souza following a cross from Sam Eyes. Coach Ricky Zambrano's squad led by one goal at intermission.
Logan Moriarty finished a play with is head in front of the net in the 50th minute to push the difference to two, as Frago Mayers and Joao Victor Felix were credited with assists. In the 63rd minute, Thompson sent a long pass into the box to Frago Mayers, whose one-touch pass to Jose Carlos Gonzalez Avellaneda was finished with a goal. Marin's first goal Saturday came in the 68th minute after Thompson collected a lose ball and chipped it into the box to Marin to make the score 4-0. A Marin one-touch pass to Frago Mayers in the 72nd minute found the back of the net to push the difference to five.
The Royals got on the board in the 83rd minute on a successful penalty kick and scored again in the 85th minute, but Marin answered 47 seconds later off a Nicola Monelli cross into the box for the final tally.
Thompson totaled four shots on goal, as nine different Night Hawks posted at least one.
Goalkeeper Lee Howarth made one save in 90 minutes for the win.
Thomas outshot the visitors 30-5, as 12 different Night Hawks had at least one. The Night Hawks had 15 shots on goal compared to only three by Warner. Zambrano's group held an edge in corner kicks, 8-1.Â
ABOUT GEORGIA GWINNETT
The Grizzlies are coming off a 2-1 win at home over No. 9 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.)Â on Oct. 11 in non-conference action and improved to 2-0-1 against top 25 competition.
After falling behind in the 10th minute, Georgia Gwinnett scored the final two goals of the match. Michael Weber tied the match in the 42nd minute off assists by Andrew White and Sagi Hirsch. Carlos Delarosa scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute.
Jack Gurr had two shots on goal in the win.
Netminder Matija Gligorovic made five saves in 90 minutes in the win.
The Grizzlies outshot the Blue Raiders, 10-8, and held an edge in corner kicks, 9-0.
Georgia Gwinnett ranks 37th in the NAIA in assists per game (2.1), 41st in shots per game (16.9) and 48th in goals per game (2.7).
Gligorovic ranks 33rd in the NAIA in goals against per match (1.0).
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE GRIZZLIES
No. 13-seed Thomas defeated Georgia Gwinnett, 3-2, in overtime in the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship opening round on Nov. 19, 2016, at TU Soccer Complex.
Gavin Rochford-Smith beat Grizzlies' goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe in the 13th minute off a rebound of a Jarrod Ingram shot that was saved.Â
Gurr tied the game for the Grizzlies in the 16th minute.
Antonio Rodriguez put the Night Hawks up 2-1 in the 77th minute off a free kick from 30 yards out that bent around the Georgia Gwinnett wall and into left side of the net.
Matti Puranen tied the game with 32 seconds left off an assist by Gurr, but Ingram netted the golden goal with 44 seconds remaining in the first overtime after beating two Grizzlies' defenders.
Thompson had three shots on goal in the win.
Gurr registered three shots on goal in the loss.
Howarth made one save in 99:16 minutes in the win.
Sharpe had six of his team's 10 saves in 99:16 in defeat.
The Night Hawks outshot the visitors 22-13, including 13-4 in shots on goal.
