Box Score Georgia Southwestern (18-19) used two 8th inning runs to blow by Thomas University (13-23) on Tuesday afternoon in Americus, GA. The loss is the sixth straight for TU, a streak that stretches back to their last win on March 22.
The Night Hawks would start strong as
Jeremy Crosby walked and
Reed Melcolm singled to lead off the second inning.
Tanner Long would reach on a bunt, and advance to second on an error that scored Crosby. Melcolm would score on a wild pitch, and
Blake Summers would drive Long home on a single to center, giving TU a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half. Starter
David Wood needed just 15 pitches to get through the first 2 innings as the NIght Hawks headed to the 3rd.
GSW would strike back to tie the game in the 3rd and 4th innings, scoring 3 runs off of reliever Chance Carter. Carter would give way to
Tate Lambert in the 5th inning, who immediately found trouble with 2 singles to start the inning. The first pitch to the third batter was lined to Melcolm at second, who executed an unassisted triple play, the first triple play in TU history. Lambert would use a double play in the 6th inning to keep the game tied through 6.
Jordan Martin tossed a perfect 7th inning, before handing it off to
Neal Hunter in the 8th.
In the eighth inning, Hunter was greeted with a leadoff homer, and the Hurricanes would add another run to make the score 5-3 headed to the final frame. TU would load the bases with 2 out in the inning, before a Melcolm groundout ended the game.
TU managed 9 hits in the game, but 14 strikeouts proved too much to overcome. Hunter took the loss on the mound, while
Jalbert Melo had 2 hits, and Summers had the only RBI.
The Night Hawks are back in action on Wednesday afternoon, when they travel to Ozark, AL for a single game with #5 Auburn-Montgomery. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm eastern time.Â
