Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Robert Morris scored only 5 runs (3 earned) in 14 innings, but it was enough to sweep Thomas University (6-14) in a neutral site doubleheader in Columbus, GA. The Eagles managed only 11 hits on the day, but it bested TU's 8 hits as they won game one 2--1, and the nightcap 3-2.
Thomas would collect only 1 hit before the 5th inning of game one, when
Gavin Murphy would single to open the inning. Pinch runner
Austin Simmons would steal second, and advance to third on a
Matthew Brady single.
Blake Summers would squeeze Simmons home for the 1-0 lead. Starter
Tate Lambert would keep the Eagles at bay, pitching 5 innings, giving up 5 hits and a walk, against 6 strikeouts and no runs. Reliever
Tyler Leach came on the sixth, walking 1 and hitting 3 batters to tie the game before being replaced by
Jared Corbitt. The freshman would get a strikeout before surrendering a hit for the go-ahead run, but would escape the inning without further damage. The 2-1 lead would prove to be too much to overcome as the Night Hawks went quietly in the 7th.
Jalbert Melo, Murphy, and Brady would net the only hits for Thomas. Leach would take the loss.
In game two, RMU would score 3 runs in the first on 2 hits and 2 Night Hawk errors. TU would answer in the bottom of the inning, as Melo walked to lead off the inning, but was forced out on a
Dillon True fielders choice.
Tanner Long followed with a double, advancing True to 3rd, to set the table for a 2-RBI single by
Jeremy Crosby. TU would eventually load the bases with 2 outs, but a
Brooks Timmons strikeout would end the threat, with the NIght Hawks down 3-2.
Jordan Martin would settle down from the rough first inning, allowing only 3 more hits and a walk against 9 strikeouts in the complete game effort. TU threatened again in the 4th when Brady was hit by a pitch, and singles by Summers and Melo would load the bases. A failed squeeze attempt and a popup would end the inning. TU would manage only 1 baserunner against 5 strikeouts over the next 3 innings to fall to 6-14 overall.
TU is back in action on Sunday, March 6 against Roosevelt College. First pitch is 3pm at Varnedoe Stadium.
