Night Hawks swept at Webber

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Thomas University was swept in the doubleheader, and the series by Webber International, falling 9-3 in the first game, and 8-3 in the second. This marks the 3rd series in 4 tries the Night Hawks have been swept in 2016.

In game one, JR Cruess led off being hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner Austin Simmons would advance to second on a Jalbert Melo single, and later score on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Crosby to give the NIght Hawks a 1-0 lead. It was short lived however, as Webber answered with 3 runs of their own off of TU starter Neal Hunter in the home half of the first.

The Night Hawks would cut the deficit in half in the third as Melo singled, stole second, and scored on a Crosby double to make the score 3-2 in the 3rd inning. WIU would score 4 unanswered to take a 7-2 lead to the top of the eighth. In the top of the inning, Melo would reach second on a Warrior error, and score on a Matthew Brady single to close the lead to 7-3. Reliever Jared Corbitt would surrender two runs in the bottom half of the inning to provide the final margin. Hunter would take the loss on the mound, throwing 7 inniings, and giving up 9 hits, 7 ER, on 3 BB and 7 Ks. Crosby delivered 2 RBI and Melo scored 2 runs.

In game two, WIU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first off of starter David Wood. TU struck back in the 3rd inning when Melo walked to lead off, and advanced to third on Brady's double with no outs. Back to back sacrifice flies from Crosby and Gavin Murphy would tie the game at 2 headed to the bottom of the fourth. WIU scored an unearned run in the 4th, and manufactured a leadoff walk into another run in the 5th to take a 4-2 lead.

TU wasn't done though, as Melo would score again on a Murphy single to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Warriors would use 2 more unearned runs over the next 2 innings to take the 8-3 win. TU surrendered 4 unearned runs in the loss, with Wood taking the mark on his record. Melo scored 2 runs and Murphy added 2 RBI.

TU is back on the diamond on Tuesday, MArch 29, when they take on in-state foe Middle Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm. For up-to-date information on this game and other TU Athletics, visit www.TUNightHawks.com.
