Errors help and hurt TU in Split

Thomas University (13-18) split a doubleheader with Edward Waters on Tuesday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium, winning game one 7-6, before falling in game two 9-5. The two teams combined for 17 errors on the day, to go along with 38 hits in the doubleheader.

In game one, EWC scored 3 runs in the top of the 2nd off of TU starter Joshua Roye to take a 3-0 lead, which would stand until the bottom of the 3rd. JR Cruess would single home Yovanny Peguero, who had reached via error to lead off the inning. With the bases loaded, Matthew Brady walked in the second run, and Jeremy Crosby followed with a 2-RBI single to give the NIght Hawks the 4-3 lead. Tanner Elsbernd would hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Brady, and the TU would lead 5-3 at the end of three innings.

TU would score again in the 4th, as Peguero led off with a homerun to left, and Blake Summers would reach second on a throwing error by the Tigers catcher. A sac bunt and a sacrifice fly by Jalbert Melo would make the score 7-3 after 5 innings.

In the 5th, Roye surrendered 3 more runs on 5 hits in the inning, drawing EWC within 1 run headed to the 6th inning. Jordan Martin came on in relief of Roye, facing 6 hitters in the final two frames to pick up the save. Roye (5 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 1 K) earned the win, as Crosby (2-3, 2 RBI) had half of the Night Hawks 4 hits.

In game two, the big inning came back to haunt the NIght Hawks. EWC scored one in the first, and added 6 more in the 3rd off of TU starter Kris Lee. Facing a 7-0 deficit, TU started the comeback bid with RBI singles by Melo, and Brady, and Melo would later score on a wild pitch to draw the Night Hawks within four at 7-3.

TU would cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning, as Cruess scored on an error, and Reed Melcolm drove home Melo with a HBP to make the score 7-5 headed to the sixth.

Jacob Moye and Neal Hunter would each give up an unearned run in the 6th and 7th respectively to provide the final margin. TU did manage to load the bases in the bases in the bottom of the seventh before a groundout to first ended the game. Cruess and Melo had 2 hits each, and Lee took the loss on the mound.

TU gets back into Sun Conference play on Friday when they travel to Babson Park, FL to take on Webber International in a three game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6pm.
