Box Score 2 Thomas University could not overcome 9 errors on a sunny afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium, as they fell to Southeastern University 9-5 and 10-6 in Sun Conference action. The two teams will square off in the series finale on Saturday at 12pm.
In game one, the Night Hawks (3-9, 0-5) struck in the bottom of the first as
Jalbert Melo walked to lead off, followed by doubles from Jr Cruess and
Tanner Elsbernd to take a 2-0 lead. The Fire would score one in the top of the second inning, but TU would answer back with one of their own as
Matthew Brady would single up the middle, and
Blake Summers would follow with a double as TU took a 3-1 lead.
Southeastern would score 7 unanswered runs in the 4th-7th innings, before the Night Hawks would add 2 of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Elsbernd would come through with a 2-RBI single with two outs, scoring Brady and Austin Simmmons. That would wrap up the scoring for both teams, as
Nick Riley threw two scoreless innings in relief of TU starter
Jordan Martin (1-2), who took the loss. Martin was charged with all 9 runs, 7 earned, while walking 3 and striking out 7. Elsbernd would finish the game 2-5, 2B, 3 RBI and Brady would finish 4-4.
In game two, the Fire would again take advantage of Night Hawk miscues to jump to a 5-0 lead in the 3rd inning, on 3 hits and 3 TU errors. The Night Hawks would strike back in the 5th, as they would use consecutive hits from
Alan Baker,
Gavin Murphy, and Summers to plate their first run of the game. Following a Cruess feilders choice, Brady was hit by a pitch, then
Tanner Long would drive in 2 runs with a single to right. Elsbernd would also be hit by a pitch, before Melo followed with an RBI single to right, and
Brooks Timmons drove in the final run of the inning with a fielders choice as TU took a 6-5 lead.
Tate Lambert, who came on in relief of starter
David Wood in the 4th, would continue to the 7th before surrendering the tying run after a 2-out error and single.
Joshua Roye started the 8th inning, but was lifted after the Fire would load the bases with no outs on a walk, an error, and a hit batter.
Tyler Leach would come to the hill, and the Fire would use a fielders choice and another Night Hawk error to plate 3 runs, leaving the NIght Hawks down 9-6.Â
Thomas would threaten in the bottom of the eighth loading the bases with 2 out before Long flew out deep to left to end the threat. The Fire would add another run in the ninth to provide the final margin of victory. Roye (0-1) would take the loss surrendering 3 unearned runs. Cruess, Long, Melo, and Summers would finish the game 2 hits each.
The two teams will conclude their series a single game beginning at 12pm on Saturday.Â
