Box Score Georgia Southwestern(9-0) used three huge innings to pull away from Thomas University (3-7) on a beautiful afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium on Tuesday. Riding innings of 4, 5, and 4 runs, the Hurricanes defeated the Night Hawks 13-2.
After a quiet first inning for both teams, GSW used 6 hits and an error off of TU starter
Nick Riley (0-2) to score 4 and take the early lead. The Night Hawks would try to answer in the bottom of the inning, getting a walk from
Brooks Timmons, and back-to back singles from
Alan Baker and
Matthew Brady, but Timmons was gunned down at the plate by the GSW left fielder.
THe Night Hawks would threaten again in the 3rd, but would fail to score again after
Austin Simmons walked to lead off the inning, and
Tanner Elsbernd followed with a single.
Tanner Long would ground into the fielders choice, and
Austin Simmons would be thrown out at the plate on the
Gant Highsmith fielders choice, before Long was thrown out at third trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt.
Kris Lee would hold the Hurricanes scoreless in the third and fourth innings before TU would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Timmons would lead off with a single, and advance to second when the GSW second baseman bobbled a grounder by Baker. A bunt by catcher
Zach Tutak that was thrown wide of the bag at first would bring Timmons around to score, and leave runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Following a ground out by
Matthew Brady,
Blake Summers would execute a squeeze to score Baker from third.Â
That would be all of the scoring for the Night Hawks, as GSW would score 5 runs in the fifth inning off of reliever Josh Roye, and 4 more in the seventh by way of a grand slam off of
Jacob Moye.
Offensively, TU would grab 6 hits from 6 different players, with Summers netting the only RBI. Night Hawk pitchers were roughed up for 16 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out 8 and walking 1.
The NIght Hawks are back in action on Friday, February 19 when they take on TSC foe Southeastern University. First pitch of the doubleheader at Varnedoe Stadium is at 1pm.Â
