Men’s Basketball Extinguishes the Fire

Box Score
Thomasville, Ga. – Thomas Men's Basketball (12-14, 6-7) extinguished the visiting Southeastern University Fire (15-12, 5-9), 93-74, Wednesday evening at the TU Gymnasium, in a Sun Conference win that gets the Night Hawks one step closer to the TSC Tournament.

TU scored early and often to open the game, eventually taking a 24-11 lead with ten minutes to play. A storm of three pointers by the Night Hawks continued to open up the game and back to back 3's by junior Devonte Birdsong made it a 15 point game with nine to play. Southeastern would cut into the TU lead but a couple of buckets down the stretch would give Thomas a 17 point advantage. TU would take their largest lead of the half, 19 points, with 2 minutes to play, on a bucket by freshman Jalen Bonds, giving the Night Hawks a 48-29 advantage, which they carried into the half.

The Fire attempted to get back into the game at the start of the second, with a 5-0 run in the opening minutes. A mid-range jumper by junior Adonai Rogers would stall the run and TU would explode over the next 3 minutes, capped off by a drive and lay-up by junior Mike Lyons, with 14:40 to play, that pushed the Night Hawks lead to 22. A bucket by junior Jamison Williams made it a 25 point game, but SEU would respond with a 3. Thomas put the game away with a 6-0 run, which featured junior TJ Rines finishing an acrobatic driving shot that sent him to line for a free throw. Birdsong followed that up with another bucket and trip to the foul line for the three point play and a 29 point lead. The Fire responded with a three the Night Hawks answered from downtown to keep the TU lead at 29. Rogers served up the exclamation point, with 7:15 to play, making it an 82-51 game and giving TU its largest lead of the evening, at 31. Down the stretch, with Thomas clearing out the bench, SEU made things look respectable, closing the gap to 15 before Thomas closed out the game.

In the 19 point dousing of the Fire, TU saw five players hit double figures in scoring. Bonds scored a game high 21 points, while Birdsong and Rogers each contributed 13 points of their own. Junior Mike Lyons (12 points) and sophomore Javoris Cooks (11 points), rounded out the Night Hawks double digit scorers. TU extended their winning streak to a season high three games.

The Night Hawks are back at home on Saturday afternoon, for their second to last TSC game of the season, when they welcome the St. Thomas University Bobcats. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
