THOMASVILLE, Ga. – After three consecutive victories to open the 2015 season, including a 3-0 win over top-ranked Davenport, the Thomas University men's soccer team will seek to continue its unblemished start on Monday at home against William Carey (Miss.).
Â
The Night Hawks are undoubtedly a difficult team to formulate a gameplan for right now, as each of the team's seven goals to date have been scored by different players.Â
Juan Figueroa and
Andres Payne got in on the action last Saturday against Middle Georgia State, converting goals that were assisted by senior midfielder
Lyle Gifford.
Â
Thomas' focus will now be on sustaining its solid start against William Carey (2-2) a quality side that has registered 10 wins or more in each of the last four seasons. Nearly half of the Crusaders' roster is made up of freshmen, but Nigel Boulton's team also has an adequate mix of accomplished veterans who will be expected to continue to produce.
Â
Pedro Villar Roldan, who was named to the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Freshman team a season ago, has continued his top form in the early going in 2015, tallying a game-winning goal and assisting on another in Carey's first match. The Crusaders' Talladega transfer Roger Viladomiu has also performed well so far, albeit from a bench role, scoring the eventual game-winning goal in his team's 3-2 victory over Spring Hill (Ala.). Over half of the goals William Carey scored in its first three matches came from freshmen.
Â
The Crusaders also performed well in defeat, scoring a third-minute goal before falling to ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson in overtime.
Â
The Night Hawks have passed each early-season test with flying colors, as virtually every in-game statistic is in TU's favor through three matches. On average, the Night Hawks are narrowly outshooting opponents 14.3-12 over the course of 90 minutes, but the TU men are not yielding quality chances to opposing teams. Just 15 out of 36 (41.6%) shots against the Night Hawks' defense have been on frame, and only two have found the back of the net.
Â
The team's back line managed to shut down a quality attacking side in Middle Georgia State last Saturday, allowing just one goal against the run of play to a team who had scored 10 goals in its three prior matches.
Â
Solid defense paired with evenly distributed scoring has been a formula for success for
Ricky Zambrano's men so far, but Monday's match won't be won easily. William Carey presents yet another chance for the Night Hawks to affirm their standing near the top of the NAIA National Coaches Poll. First touch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the TU Soccer Complex.
