Night Hawks Look For Second Conference Win

Jacob Dennis | Sports Information Intern | @jakeyd_8

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – After posting a 1-1 record on a weekend road trip to South Florida to open the conference portion of its schedule, the Thomas University men's soccer team will remain in the Sunshine State for an Oct. 1 battle against Webber International with hopes of getting back in the win column.

The eighth-ranked Night Hawks ousted No. 18 Florida Memorial to open TSC play on Sept. 25, a match that improved TU's record versus Top 25 opponents to 3-1, but the team was tripped up by unranked St. Thomas just two days later.

Thursday's match versus Webber presents the opportunity to move back over the .500 mark in TSC play while also earning a coveted conference road win.

The Warriors have posted a 3-2 record so far this season, including a 1-1 conference mark, but the team has played noticeably better at home than on the road.  In three road matches, Webber has been outscored 11-5.  In two home matches, however, Neil Cockburn's squad has outscored opponents by a resounding eight goals to none in wins over Florida College and Florida National University.

Honorable Mention All-American Stephen McGinn, who lead Webber with eight goals, graduated at the conclusion of the 2014 season, leaving the opportunity for another goal scorer to emerge as the team's top threat.  The Warriors seem to have found that new leader, however, in sophomore striker Sam Todd.

Todd has scored five of the team's 13 goals to date, including a hat trick in Webber's thrilling 4-3 victory over Johnson & Wales on Sept. 23.  He also netted the Warriors' only goal in a 2-1 loss at Keiser on Sept. 26.  Todd also leads Webber in assists, shots, and shots on goal.

Despite Todd's emergence as a scoring threat, Webber is still one of the youngest teams in the Sun Conference.  Of the team's 24 players, 15 are freshmen and sophomores.

Just three road matches remain on the Night Hawks' 2015 regular season schedule, making Thursday's tilt with Webber one of the most important games of the season so far, as each road victory will better position Thomas to earn the top seed for the TSC Tournament.  The Night Hawks final three conference matches will be played at home.  First touch on Thursday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
