THOMASVILLE, Ga. – This weekend's Sun Conference battle between Warner University and eighth-ranked Thomas University has been selected as the NAIA Network Men's Soccer Game of the Week, presented by Stretch Internet. The contest, which will take place at the TU Soccer Complex in Thomasville at 4:30 p.m., will also serve as Thomas' annual Breast Cancer Awareness / Pink-Out game.
Throughout the United States, October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Thomas University athletics is doing its part in helping the cause and spreading awareness.
Through the generous sponsorship of Badger Sport, the TU men's soccer team will be wearing commemorative pink jerseys in this Saturday's contest. A silent auction for the commemorative game-worn pink play jerseys will take place during both the women's (2:00 p.m.) and men's matches while individuals can also purchase the commemorative sideline game day shirts worn by the coaching staffs. All proceeds will go to the Archbold Foundation for Breast Cancer Patient Support. The Night Hawks raised and presented a $1,000 check last year to the foundation. Approximately 230,000 women in the U.S. alone will be diagnosed with this disease. Through their pink participation, TU hopes to encourage preventive screening as well as donations toward a cure.
The upset-minded Royals enter the Sun Conference contest with a 0-3-1, 0-2 TSC. Warner is led by Eddy De Abreu who has collected one goal and one assist this season. In goal, David Bartalos has collected 27 saves, averaging 6.75 a contest. Last time out, Warner was defeated by Johnson & Wales 3-1.
The Night Hawk men's soccer program is off to a thrilling start racking up a 7-2, 1-1 TSC, record, including three shutout victories (then No. 1 and now No. 2 Davenport 3-0, Embry-Riddle 1-0, and then No. 23 and now No. 13 Auburn-Montgomery 3-0). This past weekend, the Night Hawks defeated No. 18 and Sun Conference rival Florida Memorial in a 2-1 overtime victory. TU's three shutouts have placed them No. 37 overall in the NAIA in that category. To date, the Night Hawks have collected four Sun Conference player of the week awards,
Severin Abt and
Lyle Gifford-Offensive and
Ben McFarlane-Barnes and
Donal Branagan-Defensive, and has netted 19 goals while only allowing 10. Currently, Abt leads the Night Hawks in goals (4) while Gifford leads Thomas in assists (4). In goal, McFarlane-Barnes collected 31 saves, averaging 3.44 a game.
