Thomas, MGSU Meet For Second Time

Jacob Dennis | Sports Information Intern | @jakeyd_8

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – An important two-game stretch begins on Wednesday at home for the Thomas University men's basketball team, as the Night Hawks will face a talented Middle Georgia State team before a conference schedule-opening bout with Ave Maria on Dec. 5.

Wednesday's contest will be the second and final game of the season series between TU and the Knights.  The first game was a thriller, as the Night Hawks managed to hold off MGSU for a three point win in Cochran, Ga., on Nov. 4.  The series now shifts south to Thomasville, where head coach Brent Crews and company hold a 2-1 record so far this season.

While the team has already defeated Middle Georgia State once, the second matchup figures to be another stout test versus a veteran group of players.  The Knights returned nearly all of a 2014 team that was nearly .500 in its inaugural season in a new classification, a feat unmatched by many NAIA newcomers.

MGSU knocked off fifth-ranked William Carey on Jan. 2 for the school's first ever victory over a Top 10 opponent, something that could become a regular occurrence as the team continues to trend upward.

The Knights were difficult at home, where the Night Hawks already won this season, and the team played a difficult schedule that should also prove beneficial in 2015.  MGSU played five teams ranked in the Top 14, posting a 1-4 record in five closely contested games.

So far this season, the Night Hawks are the only blemish on MGSU's record.  The Knights have, however, played four exhibition contests versus the likes of Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Georgia State, and Columbus State.  The team lost by just 14 points in the Nov. 5 exhibition versus Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga.

Middle Georgia State is led in scoring by Kieston Standfield, who is averaging 17.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.  Ryan Wilkins, Seth Coleman and Brandon Ingleton are currently averaging 14.8, 10.5 and 10.3 points per game, respectively.

Tipoff versus the Knights is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., as Thomas will look to continue the solid early-season play at home.
